Why It Matters

What happens if you skip winterization.

Michigan winters are hard on marine equipment. These are the consequences of skipping proper winterization.

01
Cracked Engine Block or Head
Water left in cooling passages expands when it freezes. A cracked block or cracked head is one of the most expensive outboard repairs and is 100% preventable with proper winterization.
03
Corroded Lower Unit
Water contamination in the lower unit gear oil — from a failed seal — freezes, expands, and cracks the lower unit housing. A gear oil change in the fall catches this before it becomes a major repair.
04
Dead Battery
A battery left uncharged all winter sulfates and loses capacity. A properly stored or trickle-charged battery comes out of winter ready to start. A neglected battery usually doesn’t.
05
Failed Water Pump Impeller
An impeller left dry all winter can bond to the housing and crack on first use in the spring. We inspect and recommend impeller replacement as part of winterization if the impeller shows wear.
06
Hull & Interior Damage
Water left in bilge areas, livewells, and plumbing freezes and expands, cracking fittings, hoses, and hull components. Draining all water systems is a critical step in pontoon winterization.

Timing

When to winterize your boat.

July – October
Book Early
August and September offer the best appointment availability. Booking early ensures your preferred date, avoids peak-season delays, and gives us time to address any repairs discovered during winterization before winter sets in.
Before First Freeze
Hard Deadline
In Northern Michigan, nighttime temperatures can drop below freezing in October. Your motor must be winterized before the first hard freeze to prevent cooling system and block damage. Don’t wait until the last minute.

Customer Questions

Frequently asked questions.

Before the first hard freeze — typically October in Northern Michigan. We recommend scheduling in August or September to ensure availability. Don’t wait until November.
If your boat will be stored in a consistently heated space (above freezing), you have more flexibility. However, the fuel system should still be treated and gear oil changed. Call us for guidance specific to your situation.
Indoor storage provides full protection from the elements but is limited in availability. Outdoor storage is typically more available and when combined with shrink wrap, provides excellent weather protection at a lower cost.
Yes. Spring unwrap is available, and we can perform a pre-launch inspection and service to ensure your boat is ready for opening day. Contact us in late February or March to schedule.
Yes. We can assess your motor and address any freeze-related or storage-related issues. Contact us with your motor make, model, and HP and we’ll recommend the right service.
We shrink wrap most trailerable boats, including pontoons, fishing boats, and bowriders. Contact us with your boat’s make, model, and length for a quote.
Storage space is limited — especially indoor storage. If outdoor storage is full, shrink wrap with off-site storage may be an option. Call early.
