Why winter storage is so hard on batteries
Two things are working against a stored battery at the same time. Cold temperatures slow the chemical reactions inside the battery and reduce its effective capacity. And a battery left connected to the vehicle’s electrical system, even when everything is switched off, is often still being drawn down slowly by small parasitic loads — clocks, alarm systems, onboard electronics. How to actually prep a UTV battery for storage
Disconnect it. This alone eliminates the parasitic-draw problem entirely.
Store it somewhere temperature-stable. A heated garage or basement is ideal. If it has to stay in an unheated space, at minimum keep it off bare concrete, which can accelerate self-discharge.
Put it on a trickle charger or battery tender if possible. These maintain a full charge without overcharging, and they’re inexpensive relative to a replacement battery.
Check the terminals before reconnecting in spring — corrosion buildup over winter is common and easy to clean off with a wire brush.
Signs a battery needs replacing before you even store it
If a battery was already struggling to hold a charge, cranking slowly, or more than four to five years old, it’s often not worth the trickle charger. Batteries in that condition tend to fail completely by spring regardless of how well they’re stored, and replacing before winter avoids starting next season with a dead UTV.
